Puran Poli Recipe
Puran Poli is a popular Marathi dish. Here is Puran Poli recipe.Ingredients:
2 cups chana dal, soaked in water for 4 hours
2 cups jaggery (adjust for sweetness)
2 cups refined flour
3 tbsp oil
1 tsp cardamom powder
1/4th tsp nutmeg powder
1/4th tsp nutmeg powder
3/4 tsp turmeric powder
Method:
Cook chana dal in a pressure cooker till it turns soft. Drain out excess water until the dal is absolutely becomes dry.
Add jaggery and cook further and then mash into a soft paste.
Add cardamom powder, saffron, and freshly grated nutmeg powder and mix well. Form 20 balls of equal size and put it aside.
Mix refined flour, oil, water and turmeric powder. Make very soft, sticky dough. Knead very well. Use oil to knead. Divide into 20 equal portions.
With greased palms, take one portion of dough and flatten it into a disc of the size of the palm. Place a ball of "chana jaggery" paste in the centre and fold the disc from all sides to cover the paste completely.
On a well-floured board, better over a sheet of clean transparent plastic wrap, gently roll out each poli to a 6 inches disc. This can get tricky as the paste does try to slide out. Use a little flour if that happens. Roll.
Roast each poli on a hot, dry girdle. Do not use oil or ghee. Roast both sides well. Smear with ghee on both sides when done. Serve warm with clarified butter or a bowl of milk.

Patnaik asked to prove majority on March 11, 2009

Orissa Governor has now asked the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to prove majority on the floor of the house on March 11.
Naveen Patnaik has claimed the support of several Independents and the Left parties. Enough to cross the majority mark of 74 MLAs.
His government fell to a minority on Saturday when his 11-year-old alliance with the BJP collapsed. The trigger for the collapse is that Patnaik wants a lot more seats for his party, the BJD, in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Patnaik spoke to CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Saturday night after withdrawal of BJP support and senior party leader Sitaram Yechury will be here on Sunday to hold talks.CPI (M) Politburo member Brinda Karat said in case of a floor test, the CPI (M) MLA will support Patnaik.

As he stood, as many shed tears and as the chancellor spoke, Roger Stancil realized that students were different, more vulnerable. They were 18- to 25-year-olds away from home. India Govt wants to prevent Gandhi auction

The Indian government is drawing up plans to prevent several of Mahatma Gandhi's personal possessions being sold at auction in New York, an official said Monday.
A special government committee has met twice to work out how to bring the items back to India, a ministry of culture spokesmen said.
"A committee has been formed to look into this, and it has submitted recommendations to the government," said the official, who declined to be named.
The March 4-5 auction has triggered a campaign for the return of the belongings, which include Gandhi's trademark round glasses, sandals, and pocket watch as well as some dishes.
One of the committee's proposals was to approach banks and corporate firms for money to buy the pieces before the sale, officials said.
In 2007 the culture ministry successfully negotiated with British auction house Christie's to secure a letter written by Gandhi shortly before his death.
But Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi, who has launched a public appeal for funds to buy the items for the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation in Mumbai, was pessimistic about the government's efforts.
"Government committees generally don't work fast or efficiently. They just keep meeting," he said.
Tushar said so far he had raised 125,000 rupees (2,500 dollars) from donors, including one anonymous pledge of 100,000 rupees.
He said the auction house, Antiquorum Auctioneers, told him the items were likely to attract bids well above their estimate of between 20,000 and 30,000 dollars.
Tushar has said selling the items would be a "grave insult" to India's independence leader, while members of parliament have also called for them to be secured for public display in India.
The pieces are owned by a German collector who obtained them from Gandhi's grandniece, Ghita.
Tushar said they had been given to the current owner for display in museums and that Ghita was "morally not right" to provide a letter of authenticity for the sale.
"Her parents would never, ever have thought of making money out of selling these things," he said.
Gandhi, who eschewed material possessions, led India's nationalist movement against British rule and was assassinated in Delhi by a Hindu fanatic in 1948, a year after independence.

It is believed that Attukal Bhagavathi likes the payasam to be prepared in clay pots or 'Mankalam'. The word 'golden' has now come to symbolise the precious nature of the offering. Ponkala is offered to the goddess for the well being of one's husband and children. On the day of the Ponkala, lakhs of women devotees from different parts of Kerala and outside the state assemble in the temple premises. Usually a wide area, stretching over quite a few kilometers from the temple, is declared as the Ponkala area, in order to accommodate the thousands of women. They prepare the ponkala payasam, a sweet offering of rice, jaggery, plantains and coconut, in earthen pots. This is believed to be the most favourite offering of the goddess. Devotees offer other items as well, such as thirali appam, mandaputtu, panchamrutam and white rice pongal. The women usually fast on the day before the Ponkala, and the fast is broken only after the ponkala is prepared. An interesting feature of the ponkala day is that the Flying Club of Thiruvananthapuram sends a helicopter around the area, showering flowers and miniature pictures of the goddess down on the devotees. After Ponkala, the chief priest of the temple and his assistants go around and bless the devotees by sprinkling holy water and flower petals on them and the offerings. This is as a token that the goddess has accepted their offering. Then the women return home, with the prasadam.
The most significant thing about Attukal Ponkala is the spirit of unity with which the community of women partake in the entire festival. This is an occasion when the barriers of caste, creed and social status fade into insignificance.
